PPTX is PowerPoint's slide format since Office 2007, when Microsoft moved presentations onto the same XML-based Open Office format used by DOCX and XLSX. Each slide, its layout, and its embedded media get stored as separate components inside the package rather than one binary file, which is why PPTX files tend to survive corruption better than the old PPT format did.

Support extends well beyond PowerPoint itself — Google Slides, Keynote, and LibreOffice Impress all open and edit PPTX files natively, so a presentation built in one tool generally travels fine to another.
