DWG is Autodesk's proprietary format for CAD drawings — the native file type for AutoCAD and the de facto standard for exchanging 2D and 3D design data across architecture, engineering, and construction. A single DWG can hold geometric primitives, layers, dimensions, text, and metadata describing an entire floor plan or mechanical assembly.

Because the format is proprietary and has changed across AutoCAD versions over the decades, DWG compatibility between different CAD tools — or even different AutoCAD release years — isn't always guaranteed. Software that claims to "support DWG" often means one specific version of the spec, not all of them.
