JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the default format for photographic images on the web, largely because its lossy compression discards visual detail the human eye barely notices while cutting file size dramatically. That trade-off is exactly why it's the wrong format for line art or screenshots with sharp text edges — the same compression that's invisible on a photo introduces visible artifacts around hard edges.
Being lossy also means JPEG degrades with repeated re-saving: each save re-compresses the image, so a file that's been edited and exported several times will look visibly worse than the original, even if no change was intentional.
Grab the file below to test image upload handling, thumbnail generation, or compression-quality settings against a real JPEG rather than a placeholder graphic.
