DOC is the original Microsoft Word binary format — the one that predates the XML-based DOCX standard introduced in Word 2007. A DOC file stores text, fonts, images, and tables in a proprietary binary structure that Word itself has to interpret, which is part of why the format was eventually replaced.
You'll still run into DOC files in legacy archives, older templates, and systems that haven't been updated in years. Most current word processors — Word, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs — can still open and convert them, but compatibility isn't always perfect, especially with older formatting or embedded objects.
