ODT is the word-processing member of the OpenDocument Format (ODF) family — an ISO-standardized, vendor-neutral alternative to Microsoft's document formats. LibreOffice Writer and OpenOffice Writer use it as their default, and Microsoft Word can open and save it too.

Because the specification is open rather than owned by a single vendor, ODT sees heavier adoption in government and public-sector systems where long-term document accessibility can't depend on one company's continued support for a proprietary format.
